Cooking Lesson- Calzones

For the holidays we wanted to tighten our financial belt a bit and get more creative with the gift giving. One of our ideas was to give "lessons" to our children. Mr. CWAE and myself have lots to lend, and time is one thing our children are always asking for.

I gave the girls two cooking lessons each for two hours every other Saturday. While I am teaching, Mr. CWAE gives the other child an art lesson or guitar lesson.

The house we are renting this year has a long ramp on the front for the past owner who was injuried in a fire fighter training exercise! Anyway, we were leaving to go to the bus stop and decided to walk down the ramp.... whoa nelly! ICE. Lea sat on her rear and slid down it, while Mia and I danced our way back to the door and went through the basement! Hope you enjoy the images I shot after the children went off to school.

May the force be with you!

Family night is one of my favorite weekly get togethers. Our family dines at the dining table, we share giggle, and eat a lovely meal. This week was chocolate crepes with fresh cream and raspberry stuffing. We also had Italian sausage and freshly brewed southern sweet tea! Yum.

Then we join together on mom and dad's king bed to read a family devotional and the bible. We discuss our faith, beliefs, and situational ideas.

Last on the list is an activity. Sometimes it a board game, maybe legos, or soap carving. The activities get pretty strange... always something new and always so much fun! This week we decided to explore origami. But not just plain ole Japanese style.... STAR WARS style. Mr. CWAE has decided that the children have to watch all 6 episodes of Star Wars in the proper order (chronological-not released order). They are on movie number 4 by the way.

52 Project WEEK FIFTY TWO - PAPER AIRPLANES!!!

Don't even know what the 52 project is? MY spin on the 365...

*I have to tell you.... when I started this project I thought I had invented the idea. Little did I know that photographers had been doing the 52 project for years. duh. Guess that means I didn't invent the internet either! Whoa embarrassing!

Well I made it and I completed a YEAR worth of posting. I have to say I am proud and sorta surprised that I did it. Some weeks I loved posting and others ones were more of a chore. The thing is I am proud and so I can stand tall and say, "Oh, I've done that!"

This is a famous family night activity where we all designed our own paper airplanes and then had a contest for flying them. It got a bit silly but it was super fun! I challenge you to spend more quality time with the ones that love you and that you love.

52 Week Project - Week 51 Pipe Fish

Don't even know what the 52 project is? MY spin on the 365...

If you are into photography you have heard of the "365 project" where you take, edit, and post a picture each and everyday of the year. I mean, I love shooting, love editing, love sharing but I want days off too. So, here's the compromise...I am doing a 52 project. A blog post a week, five photos (Mon.-Fri. get it?!) and a theme to the five shots. Posted each Wednesday.

Week fifty-one - pipe fish

So the girls were fishing with their nets on our last family picnic trip and one of them caught a strange fish. After researching on wikipedia we found out she had caught a "pipe fish" which is related to a seahorse!!

Wikipedia: Pipefish look like straight-bodied seahorses with tiny mouths. The name is derived from the peculiar form of their snout, which is like a long tube, ending in a narrow and small mouth which opens upwards and is toothless. The body and tail are long, thin, and snake-like. They have a highly modified skeleton formed into armored plating. This dermal skeleton has several longitudinal ridges, so that a vertical section through the body looks angular, not round or oval as in the majority of other fishes.

Family night a couple of weeks ago included soap carving. All you need is some Ivory Snow soap and some carving tools. Mr. CWAE demands the best in tools so of course these are professional ones but you could use a butter knife. The soap is super soft and easy to manipulate. We sketched our ideas on paper first and then got to carving. The soap shavings were made into laundry detergent so we killed two birds with one soap! HA

52 Project week 42- caterpillar to butterfly

Life is so amazing. I know I was amazed at the creation of my children and their birth and even how they grow and develop each day. The youngest received a butterfly environment for her 7th birthday and to be honest with you I thought it was going to be a BIG fail in our house. WOW was I wrong. We got 5 caterpillars in the mail in a steamy cup full of this cornmeal looking goop. In about 5 days this spiny and CHUBBY caterpillars climbed up to the roof of the cup and began to form a shell. It was absolutely amazing to see this happening right on the kitchen counter.About seven days later they were hard and iridescent so we transferred the paper they had adhered to in to the "environment". They were pinned to the wall literally with a pin. Seven more days and we had butterflies hatching!!! They dried their wings and sucked sugar water off of napkin balls we made for them. Then they were all named and released to Earth at two days old. We released about 2 a day until all 5 were on their path to a new life. So eye opening to be a part of such a transition.

Can you believe it, I am on week 41 already! I can hardly wait for my week 52 post. WOW! I have so much to share, but for know, I hope you enjoy the smoke. This series of images was created in studio. I had a back/side light and a white foam core reflecting back on to the smoke. It was an incense stick to keep the stream constant.

52 Project Week 37 Dirty Worms

A recent trip to the worm farm turned out to be an eye opening experience and one that we took home with us literally. The Williams' family are the proud owners of our very own worm farm!

This all started when Journey (first grader) was studying worms in class, they were learning all about them and raising their own in little cups of soil. When the unit ended and the projects were complete the worms came home to live with us. They didn't last long since we had no idea how to properly care for them. Oh, the disappointment that washed over her face when she realized they had run away only to dry up on the back porch.

Her birthday was only a couple weeks after the "incident" so she had convinced us that we should get her more worms that she could play with. Hmmmm? worms as toys? I wasn't quite sure that this would fit in with our family. I recalled meeting the good people of "Dirty Worms" at a Natural Awakenings film festival and gave them a call. Brad and Becky were quick to call me back and inform me of my options in home worm farming and how easy it all could be. I still wasn't sure this was for us. Then they said, "we are having a harvest at the farm this weekend if you'd like to visit, you'll learn a lot."

We (the entire family) hopped in the truck and headed to the Dirty Worm farm in Ocklawaha, FL WOW what a cool setup. We had a vip tour of the facility and learned so much about worms, their life cycle, their castings (aka poop) and how they are harvested in a productive and humane system. It's just amazing! Of course my camera was there to capture the finer parts of the farm! Enjoy the photos.

Then we made our own worm farm in a hot pink tub to take home. Our worms are doing well and haven't had any problems so far. We love composting in to the tub and visiting them from time to time. There is no odor and they seem to keep to themselves under all that rich soil. We even got a bag of castings to use in our plants, so excited to see the results of this rich and natural fertilizer.

52 Project- week 36 Repurposed Me

Week thirty-six - Repurposed me

As you know we are an family of artists and love the visual arts. This love has been enriched by our monthly Friday night Art Walk in downtown Ocala. If you haven't come out for this wonderful event then I urge you to do so in June on the First Friday. The downtown area comes alive with a buzz of culture and rich artistic flair. You will see sidewalk painters, sculptors, singers, and just interesting characters. The local galleries are open with food samples, and wonderful art for the viewing and purchase. We swing in all the shops and say hello to old friends and try to make new ones. It never fails that I click away some super duper images, such amazing subjects.

The May walk was a particularly exciting one as I was picking up a new piece commissioned for my new studio. Jody Schaible of "Repurposed Me" constructed a Cindi Cyclops out of silverware, a platter, and a penny. *note the penny has the date of establishment for Cindi with an eye photography....super cool huh?! Jody has a passion for using his hands to make some amazing pieces and his mind is ever working on how to reuse and repurpose daily objects. Jody and his cutie wife Elaine will be at the First Friday art walk in June as well, stop by their booth, pick out something interesting. You'll be saving the planet and lookin' good at the same time!

Print labs are different

Another photographer did a great job showing the difference in prints from labs. Thought I should share just to shed some light on the subject.

The first image is from the pro (not sure what lab she uses, but it's a good one for sure) The rest are your everyday print labs down the street. This isn't to say you have to buy all of your prints from Cindi with an eye's lab directly (sometimes the cost just exceeds the desire) however when you purchase the "Digital Collection" of images don't expect to have the same color and paper quality as your original images.

Who wants to PARTY?

Everyone loves a good party! I love shooting parties, attending parties, however planning one can sometimes be no fun. I'd like to help by offering SEVEN solutions, tidbits of advice, and some of my BFF's contact info to help you make your next party a successful one.

1. Going in solo? Well this all depends on what kind of party you are planning and how BIG the gig is gonna get! I recommend for over 80 guests, you consult an event planner. (they are truly a gift) They have vision, organization, and can keep you on a budget.

2. You have to have a reason to party and an audience to entertain. So pick a theme, make a guests list and then have a designer layout the invitations. The better you communicate to your guests the easier the entire event will flow.

3. Food. yes they get hungry! Whether or not your event straddles an eating hour you still need to provide something for guests to munch on. If it's a full catered meal, a cake, or a candy bar, it's still a great way to break the ice and fill the tummies.

4. Music and announcements can entertain and inform your guests of the party's activities. A good and talented DJ will keep the flow of the party going and even increase the mood of the guests. This is very important for the party to maintain it's purpose. Plus who doesn't love to shake their rump a bit?!

5. Decor and feeling. You can do alot with an empty room, it can also make people feel uncomfortable and bored if not decorated properly. Balloons, linens, place settings, party favors, etc. There are so many choices and options.

6. Depending on the attendants to your party you might want other activities for them. For children I recommend a bounce house with or without water, face painting, magician, or yard games. For adults maybe live entertainment- dancers, comedian, or mystery theatre. Dressing up in costumes is fun too.

7. With all of this fun to be had by all you don't want to miss a moment or feel like you can't enjoy the party because you are an overwhelmed host/ hostess. Hire a professional photographer to capture images of the event so you can remember the moment for years to come. You could also bring on a videographer if the agenda calls for it.

Not quite sure I'd like to live in the Cracker Days. I mean I love the simple life and strive to make mine even more simple if at all possible. But people in the old days had it rough. Growing their groceries, canning their food, cooking with fire alone, making your own tools, sewing your wardrobe and on and on and on. Let us learn this lesson... our lives are easier because of others that came before us, and we too shall pass on our conveniences. Just don't fill your life with too much to do just because it's easier. Enjoy the calm that comes with a simple life.

52 Project week 32 movie making

My girls love hanging out on the King size bed and playing board games, watching tv, snuggling, and most recently learning how to use the video camera. They made puppets out of popsicle sticks and did a "play" of sorts for the other sister to film, they took turns and had some fun. So did I capturing the moment on film, stills of course. Seriously go fly a kite! It's so much fun. We picked these kites up at a church rummage sale for 80 cents for both! Then we headed to Booster Stadium (remember to watch for power lines and trees) Electricity has already been discovered!You need some good wind but that's about all, maybe a jog of water and some sunglasses too. I hope you get out and fly a kite soon, it's such a good use of time! Just look at the smiling faces.

We had so much fun with this family art project. The kits were found at Target for $9.99 and two monsters came in a set. They came with permanent markers and stickers which J chose to use on hers. However S, K and I decided to use acrylic paint on ours. We sketched our ideas first and then went to painting. Ever had that feeling, when you know you saw something but you can't believe your eyes?

Ok, here's the deal. I drive out to Sholom Park quite a bit for work and always enjoy the drive since no one is asking for a snack, singing a random song, or fighting for my attention. It's a time for ME! I look out the window, I let the breeze blow my hair, I close my eyes and day dream WHOA I'm driving here! So, out of the corner of my eye I see a striped horse, no a zebra, no couldn't be.

It's sunset, it's been a long day I didn't just see a herd of zebras grazing in an Ocala horse pasture?! And indeed I did. Enjoy the shots.

52 Project - week 17 - Potato Soup

You say PotAto, I say potahto, we ALL say Potato soup! One of my favorite childhood recipes and dinner experiences was POTATO soup! I know it's the life of a frugal kid, but HEY it was a rich life!

I recently got 5 lb bags of potatoes BOGO at Publix and you know what that means... potato soup marathon! So I peeled 10 lbs of potatoes and froze the soup for a later date and of course we had soup that night for dinner.

So here's the deal... You make the soup according to the recipe (see below) and then you GO BANANAS with the toppings. In our house we have added: hot dogs, cheddar cheese, mozarella, crackers of all sorts, bacon, chicken, pork, beef, bologna, seasonings (cavendars of course!). NOW settle down, we didn't put all of these ingredients in all at once, ok maybe we tried it once, but the idea is to use what is left over in the fridge to dress up the basic potato soup.

Week seventeen - Potato soup!

Soup Recipe

3 tbsp. margarine or butter
1/2 onion chopped
4-5 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
Instant mash potatoes (a box)
Powered milk, 1/2-3/4 cup
Seasonings

Saute onions in butter. Meanwhile, boil water and place into it the potatoes. After potatoes have boiled and they are soft, remove them with a slotted spoon. Set the potatoes aside in a bowl and SAVE the water. Add the powered milk to the water, stir it in. While milk is lightly boiling add the instatn mashed potatoes to consistency you want your soup to be (I like it thick). Return the cooked potatoes, onion and desired seasoning to the pot. Serve soup plain and let your guest "Dress it for Success!"

So last night as a family activity each member got their cameras and we shot circles around the house. The challenge was to shoot 5 circles and compose them in the same spot on the frame. Symphony came to the share time with over 50 circles!! ALL composed in the center. I chose to compose them in the upper left third. Hope you enjoy them.

An amazing client of mine allowed me and my fam to stay at their beach condo a couple of nights prior to there beach session. While staying there I took over 1,000 images. The area was way too inspiring. Enjoy. Leave a comment here on your favorite beach in Florida.

If you haven't read my post on the shutter disaster its worth a gander. My Canon 5D bit it hard two weeks ago mid-assignment and had to take a flight to VA to Canon. Well she's home again and ready to work.
NOW for the fun part... Let's name her! My cars have names, my kids do too, but my camera... nameless. It's like she's not even a member of the family, and you all know I spend more time with her than anyone in the fam. So help me name her!

52 week project - Week twelve - Gardening

I love the idea of growing my own groceries. Not only would it be a large savings but the satisfaction of biting in to a food that I knew was grown without chemicals and suffering would just taste better.

Ok, this isn't just a theory of mine, I've actually successfully grown my own garden and eaten the fruits of my labor. Every year the children beg me to start a new garden, so I weed the old plot, till it, clean and prep it for the seedlings. About a week into this magical experience the kids lose interest and I am forced to weed, feed, and care for the crops myself.

I still love my time spent out there in the sunshine watching the sprinkler rain on the garden. I talk to God when I'm out there and the toads seem to listen. Every so often I get to pick a ripe tomato or a green bean. I even rinse and eat some right in the garden, it's my little slice of heaven.
